The multi-Oscar winning Parasite will go down in history

Praise is pouring in from around the world for this masterpiece from South-Korean director Bong Joon-ho. Starting with the Festival de Cannes in 2019 where he unanimously received the Palme d’Or, followed by the Golden Globes and BAFTA ceremonies in 2020 with the awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay. The Oscars have topped this success with the ultimate award, presenting him with the highly coveted Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay titles. A milestone in the ceremony’s history that traditionally favours American cinema, as it’s the first time a South-Korean director has won the Oscar for Best Picture. It is also the first winning film whose cast is primarily Asian. Parasite is an achievement that is so highly acclaimed due to its story, staging, characters, acting and editing as well as the film as a whole.

Architecture and interior design for a tailor-made atmosphere

Beside the story, which is as fascinating as it is disturbing, there is first a setting. Striking and ever-present. This is provided by the ultra-modern, beautiful, bright, uncluttered and perfect villa, and reflected in the image of the extremely wealthy Park family who live there and praise its contemporary and fashionable style. Designed and created specifically for the film, everything gives an impression of luxury, comfort and perfection. The huge rooms and large windows allow the light to shine in brightly.

In this space, each object has been thought about: paintings, furniture, carpets, lights, right up to everyday objects and the picturesque kitchen, each piece of the puzzle has been examined and selected with great care to give life to a very precise universe. The minimalist interior design is reflected by a tamed jungle outside. Within this meticulously designed framework, our Laurastar Smart I appears at the foot of a staircase that embodies the whole plot. Our ironing system has a natural place here thanks to its Swiss design, which is both practical and well thought-out.

The magic of scenery

The seemingly perfect house, designed by the fictitious architect Namgoong Hyeonja, gives the impression of letting everything be seen while the plot on the other hand, tells us what is really hidden within. Secrets are concealed in corners that appear invisible at first glance, a world of straight lines, cubes and verticality. The stairs also play a leading and “metaphorical” role (a recurring theme in the film) of the social hierarchy: there are those who climb and those who go down, those who live at the top and those who live at the bottom, and the same logic is applied to the whole house.

The film’s plot follows the story of two families who are at odds with each other: the wealth of one reflects the misery of the other, the interior space of the first against the cramped confines of the second, sophistication versus rustic character, beauty contrasts with unattractiveness. Naive kindness does not excuse cruelty, this is the director's art of playing with light and shadow, which intersect and mingle, literally and figuratively, as one descends into the depths of the house like the depths of the human soul. Far from being simplistic, the treatment of the characters is of great finesse, without bias or judgment. This required the mastery of the great director Bong Joon-ho, as well as his talented art director and production designer Lee Ha Jun.

Believing in excellence and pushing the boundaries

After getting past the subtitle barrier, you quickly forget the Korean identity of the film, with its universal subject matter that also makes it intimate. However, it wasn’t an easy ride for the filmmaker who had to convince others and make a name for himself in international auteur cinema.

Laurastar is proud to have believed in another style of cinema and to be associated with Parasite, thereby supporting excellence and ambition, investing in a project of international scope, in the image of our DNA: in a continued search of excellence, we continue to innovate and push the limits of perfection, creating new and exclusive technologies. Through our attention to detail, Laurastar makes the everyday lives of its users easier and more beautiful!
