In winter, because of the cold and the activities we perform, we cover up, sweat, and are exposed to a greater risk of transmitting microbes. Washing, refreshing and disinfecting clothes is therefore necessary, but complicated. On top of this, some materials are very delicate. How can I take care of winter clothes in a simple way and without damaging them? Find out here.

THE HEADACHE OF WINTER GEAR

Whether we ski all winter long or just for a week, all of our accessories are in contact with moisture, repeatedly and for a long time. While sweating is perfectly normal, the decomposition of sweat by bacteria living on the surface of the skin leads to bad smells. Shoes, jackets, ski helmets, hats, thermal underwear, socks or even airtight gloves often dry poorly and stay damp. This is all the more problematic when stored at the bottom of a bag or a closet, as the lack of ventilation leads to the growth of bacteria and fungi.

TAKING CARE OF DELICATE MATERIALS

Most materials in winter are delicate. Like those soft, warm angora jumpers, or wool coats that we end up wearing frequently, leaving them lying around and not washing them all that often... Unless you have them dry-cleaned, they may shrink or look worse after a machine wash, no matter how soft. The inner linings of helmets or masks are also difficult to clean. Nevertheless, this equipment is used in extreme conditions. It must retain its technical properties of warmth and breathability. And yet it must be comfortable to wear.

OPT FOR A GENTLE WASH

When washing delicate fabrics, it is important to refer to the manufacturer's care instructions. Turn the clothes inside out and run them through a normal machine cycle in cold or lukewarm water so as not to shrink the fibres. For very fragile fabrics, hand wash with a mild soap and dry flat.

ALLOW AIRING

Nothing beats natural air. Fresh, clean air is key to well-being! Fabric fibres absorb ambient odours, which is why a coat can sometimes smell of food or cigarettes. In the same way as you air your home, you should get into the habit of airing your clothes on a daily basis and especially after a day of exercise. Shoes should also be left out in the fresh air after exercise, making sure to open them properly to help expel moisture.

OPT FOR STEAM DISINFECTION

Disinfection is complementary to machine washing at low temperature - which does not eliminate all the microbes. In fact, these are only eliminated at 60° and above. It can also be used when machine washing is not possible, such as for travel bags or helmets. It is also very useful if the clothes are not particularly dirty and just need a freshening up. Steam disinfection is used to refresh, deodorise, disinfect, plump and smooth fabrics. It is suitable for all materials, even the most delicate - and for all shapes, even the most complex or bulky. This will extend the clothes' lifespan. You also save on dry cleaning costs and reduce your consumption of chemicals: additional advantages, and by no means less important!
